The Sammo Hung Masterclass took place in Singapore in May 2024, featuring the legendary director, stunt choreographer, and Hong Kong cinema icon, Sammo Hung. Hosted by the Asian Film Awards Academy and the Singapore Film Society during the 12th Singapore Chinese Film Festival, the masterclass offered attendees a deep dive into Hung’s illustrious career spanning over fifty years. Five of his iconic films were screened, providing a comprehensive look at his contributions to martial arts and action cinema. The event included insightful discussions where Hung shared behind-the-scenes stories and his filmmaking philosophy, enriching the audience’s understanding of his impact on Asian cinema.

As the Festival Art Director and Designer for the Sammo Hung Masterclass, I had the honour of designing the key art and all marketing collaterals for the event. My vision was to create a sophisticated and contemporary identity that redefines perceptions of Kungfu, ensuring it is seen as a relevant art form. The design features a minimalistic and modern aesthetic, utilising muted shades of purple and white, along with monochrome images of Sammo Hung, creating a contemporary look while honouring the majesty of Sammo Hung’s legendary contributions to martial arts and action cinema. This approach aimed to celebrate his illustrious career in a way that resonates with both traditional and modern audiences.
